Routine dental x-rays (bitewings) are considered preventive care and are typically covered at 100% by dental insurance, meaning $0 out-of-pocket. Even more comprehensive x-rays are usually covered at 80% to 100%. We verify your benefits before your visit so you know what to expect.
Digital X-Rays Mean Lower Radiation
We use digital x-rays exclusively, which produce 80% less radiation than traditional film x-rays. Better for your health and produces clearer images for diagnosis. Cost is the same as traditional x-rays but the technology is dramatically better.
Only X-Rays You Actually Need
Some practices recommend frequent x-rays to maximize billing. We do not. Dr. Bhatia orders x-rays based on what your dental health actually requires. For most healthy adults, that means bitewing x-rays once per year and a panoramic x-ray every 3 to 5 years.
Included in New Patient Special
Our new patient special bundles an exam, x-rays (typically 4 bitewings), and cleaning at a discounted rate. This is the most affordable way to get a complete diagnostic starting point with a new dentist.
Image Sharing With Other Providers
If you need to share x-rays with a specialist or insurance company, we can send digital copies at no charge. This often saves you from paying for duplicate x-rays at the specialist office.
FSA and HSA Funds Apply
Dental x-rays are qualifying medical expenses for FSA and HSA accounts. If you do not have insurance, using pre-tax dollars effectively reduces your cost by 20% to 30%.

Why Dental X-Rays Are Almost Always Worth It
X-rays catch problems that are completely invisible to a visual exam. Cavities between teeth, infections at tooth roots, bone loss from gum disease, impacted wisdom teeth, and cysts all show up on x-rays before they show up as symptoms. Catching them early often means cheap, easy treatment instead of expensive, complex treatment later.
Since most insurance plans cover routine x-rays at 100%, there is no financial cost for most patients. Without insurance, our new patient special bundles x-rays with the exam and cleaning at a discounted rate. FSA and HSA funds reduce the cost further for self-pay patients.
For most healthy adults, the recommended schedule is bitewing x-rays once per year and a panoramic x-ray every 3 to 5 years. This is the minimum needed to catch problems early. Patients with active dental issues, ongoing gum disease, or who are planning implants may need additional imaging. We only order x-rays when there is a clinical reason, not as routine billing.

How much do dental x-rays cost in Anaheim Hills?
Routine bitewing x-rays (the standard ones taken at checkups) typically cost $35 to $75 total for a set of 4 images. Single periapical x-rays cost $25 to $50 each. Panoramic x-rays of your full mouth cost $100 to $250. 3D CT scans for implant planning cost $250 to $500. Most insurance plans cover routine x-rays at 100% as preventive care.
Does insurance cover dental x-rays?
Yes. Most dental insurance plans cover routine x-rays (bitewings, taken annually) at 100% as part of preventive care, meaning $0 out-of-pocket. More extensive x-rays like panoramic and full mouth series are typically covered at 80% to 100%. CT scans for implant planning may have different coverage. We verify your specific benefits before your visit.
How often do I need dental x-rays?
For healthy adults, bitewing x-rays are typically taken once per year at your annual checkup. Panoramic x-rays are usually taken every 3 to 5 years or when needed for specific treatment planning. Children may need x-rays more frequently because their teeth are still developing. Patients with active dental issues may need x-rays at every visit.
Are digital x-rays more expensive than traditional ones?
No. Digital x-rays at our office cost the same as traditional film x-rays would. The benefit is that digital x-rays produce 80% less radiation, provide instant images on a screen, can be easily shared with other providers, and are more environmentally friendly (no chemical processing). All dental x-rays at MySmile are digital.
What is included in the x-ray cost?
The cost includes taking the x-ray, processing the digital image, Dr. Bhatia reviewing the image as part of your exam, and storing the image in your file for future comparison. If you need copies sent to a specialist or insurance company, that is included at no additional charge.
Can I refuse x-rays to save money?
You can, but it is usually not a good idea. X-rays catch cavities between teeth, infections at tooth roots, bone loss from gum disease, and many other issues invisible to the naked eye. Skipping x-rays often means missing problems that become much more expensive to treat later. Since most insurance covers x-rays at 100%, there is rarely a financial reason to skip them.
Why are CT scans more expensive than regular x-rays?
CT scans produce 3D images using more complex technology and equipment than 2D x-rays. They show bone density, nerve locations, and anatomical relationships that are critical for planning dental implants and other surgical procedures. The increased cost reflects the more sophisticated imaging. CT scans are typically used only when specifically needed, not as routine imaging.
Are dental x-rays safe?
Yes. Modern digital dental x-rays use very low radiation, equivalent to about a day or two of natural background radiation from your environment. A lead apron and thyroid collar provide additional protection. The diagnostic value of x-rays in catching dental problems early far outweighs the minimal radiation exposure for almost all patients.
