Your Child's Dental Milestones

Understanding what to expect at each stage helps you stay on top of your child's oral health. Here is a general timeline:

6 to 12 months

First Dental Visit

The American Dental Association recommends scheduling your child's first dental visit by their first birthday or when the first tooth appears. This early visit helps us establish a baseline and catch any concerns.

2 to 5 years

Building Habits

Regular checkups every six months. We focus on teaching brushing skills, monitoring tooth development, and applying fluoride treatments to protect growing teeth.

6 to 12 years

Mixed Dentition

As baby teeth fall out and permanent teeth come in, we monitor alignment, apply sealants to new molars, and watch for any orthodontic concerns.

13+ years

Teen Dental Care

Continued preventive care, wisdom tooth monitoring, and discussions about orthodontics, sports guards, and maintaining oral health through the teen years.

Pediatric Dentistry FAQs

When should my child first visit the dentist?
The American Dental Association recommends a first dental visit by age 1 or within 6 months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits help us monitor development, apply fluoride, and get your child comfortable with the dental office.
How often should my child see the dentist?
We recommend dental checkups and cleanings every 6 months for most children. Some children with higher risk of cavities or developmental concerns may benefit from more frequent visits.
What if my child is scared of the dentist?
Dental anxiety is very common in children. Our team is experienced in working with anxious kids. We take things slowly, explain everything in kid-friendly language, and use gentle techniques to build trust. Most children who are initially nervous become comfortable after their first visit or two.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?
Yes. Modern digital X-rays use very low levels of radiation. We only take X-rays when clinically necessary, such as to check for cavities between teeth or to monitor the development of permanent teeth. We use protective lead aprons for added safety.
What are dental sealants and does my child need them?
Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth (molars). They fill in the natural grooves where bacteria and food can get trapped, reducing cavity risk by up to 80%. We typically recommend sealants when the permanent molars come in, around ages 6 and 12.
My child sucks their thumb. Is that a problem?
Thumb-sucking is normal in infants and toddlers. Most children stop on their own by age 3 to 4. If the habit continues beyond age 4, it can affect tooth alignment and jaw development. Dr. Bhatia can evaluate your child and provide gentle strategies to help them stop.
What should I do if my child knocks out a tooth?
For a baby tooth, do not try to reinsert it. Clean the area gently and call our office. For a permanent tooth, pick it up by the crown (not the root), rinse gently, and try to place it back in the socket or keep it in milk. Call us immediately at (714) 998-4151. Time is critical for saving a knocked-out permanent tooth.
Do you treat children with special needs?
Yes. We welcome children of all abilities and adapt our approach to meet each child's unique needs. Dr. Bhatia and our team are patient, flexible, and committed to providing comfortable care for every child.
