Why Anaheim Hills Patients Choose MySmile for Root Canals

Straightforward root canals in office, honest referrals for complex cases, and the crown done here either way.

Save Your Tooth Instead of Pulling It

A root canal saves your natural tooth, which is almost always better than extracting it and replacing it with an implant or bridge. Your natural tooth root preserves jawbone, maintains your bite, and costs less than extraction plus replacement. Dr. Bhatia will always recommend saving the tooth when it is a viable option.

Honest About What We Handle vs. What We Refer

Dr. Bhatia performs standard root canals in office, including front teeth and premolars. For complex cases like molars with unusual anatomy, calcified canals, or teeth that need retreatment, she refers to an endodontist who specializes in difficult root canals. You will always know upfront whether your case can be handled here or needs a specialist.

Crown Placed in the Same Office

Most teeth need a crown after a root canal to protect and strengthen them. Whether Dr. Bhatia does the root canal herself or you see an endodontist, the crown is done right here. No need to find a separate office for the restoration.

Sedation for Anxious Patients

If the words "root canal" make you nervous, you are not alone. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available so you can get through the procedure comfortably. Many patients are surprised at how straightforward it actually is.

Evening Appointments Available

Open until 7 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Tooth pain does not wait for convenient timing, and neither should your treatment.

Same-Day Evaluation for Tooth Pain

If you are in pain and think you might need a root canal, call us. We offer same-day evaluations to diagnose the problem and get you out of pain as quickly as possible. In many cases, the root canal can be started the same day.

What Happens During a Root Canal

First, Dr. Bhatia takes an x-ray to see the shape of the root canals and determine the extent of the infection. She then numbs the tooth and surrounding area completely. A small opening is made in the top of the tooth to access the pulp chamber, where the infected nerve tissue is located.

Using specialized instruments, she removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the canals, and disinfects them thoroughly. The canals are then filled with a biocompatible material called gutta-percha and sealed. A temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth until the permanent crown is ready.

About a week later, you return for the permanent crown, which takes about 15 minutes to fit and cement. After the crown is placed, the tooth looks and functions like any other tooth. Most patients are back to normal activities the day after the root canal.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a root canal cost in Anaheim Hills?

Root canal costs depend on which tooth is involved. Front teeth are generally less expensive because they have a single root canal. Premolars have one or two canals and cost more. Molars are the most complex with three or four canals and are typically the most expensive. Industry-wide, root canals range from $700 to $1,500 before insurance. Most dental plans cover root canals at 50% to 80%. Contact our office at (714) 998-4151 for an estimate based on your specific tooth and insurance.

Does a root canal hurt?

Modern root canals are far less painful than their reputation suggests. The tooth is thoroughly numbed with local anesthesia before any work begins. Most patients say it feels similar to getting a filling. The procedure actually relieves pain by removing the infected nerve tissue that was causing it. If you are anxious, nitrous oxide and oral sedation are available for additional comfort.

How long does a root canal take?

A standard root canal on a front tooth or premolar typically takes 45 minutes to an hour. The procedure is usually completed in a single visit. A separate appointment is then scheduled for the crown, which protects the tooth long-term. Complex cases involving molars may take longer or require a referral to an endodontist.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

In most cases, yes. A root canal removes the nerve and blood supply from inside the tooth, which makes the tooth more brittle over time. A crown covers and protects the tooth so it does not crack or break. Dr. Bhatia handles the crown right here in office, typically at a follow-up appointment about a week after the root canal.

What are the signs I might need a root canal?

Common signs include severe or lingering tooth pain (especially to hot or cold), pain when biting or chewing, a darkened or discolored tooth, swelling or tenderness in the gums near the tooth, and a persistent pimple on the gums. If you are experiencing any of these, call us for a same-day evaluation. Not all of these symptoms guarantee you need a root canal, but they all warrant a professional diagnosis.

What is the difference between a general dentist and an endodontist for root canals?

An endodontist is a dentist who completed additional years of training specifically in root canal procedures and treats complex cases daily. General dentists like Dr. Bhatia perform standard root canals regularly and are fully qualified for straightforward cases. For teeth with unusual anatomy, calcified canals, or previous root canal treatment that failed, an endodontist's specialized training and equipment make them the better choice. Dr. Bhatia will always be upfront about which cases she handles in office and which benefit from a specialist.

Can a root canal fail?

Root canals have a success rate of about 95%. In rare cases, a tooth may not heal as expected or may develop new problems later. Signs of a failed root canal include returning pain, swelling, or a new infection. If this happens, the tooth may need retreatment by an endodontist or, in some cases, extraction. Following aftercare instructions and getting the crown placed promptly both help prevent complications.

Is it better to get a root canal or just pull the tooth?

Saving the tooth with a root canal is almost always the better option when possible. Your natural tooth maintains jawbone density, keeps your bite aligned, and functions better than any replacement. Extracting a tooth and replacing it with an implant or bridge costs more in the long run and involves additional procedures. Dr. Bhatia will recommend extraction only when the tooth truly cannot be saved.
