What to Do in a Dental Emergency

The first step in any dental emergency is to call our office at (714) 998-4151. Our team will ask about your symptoms, provide immediate guidance, and schedule you for the earliest available appointment.

While you wait to be seen, you can manage pain with over-the-counter ibuprofen (not aspirin, which can increase bleeding). Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for swelling. If a tooth is knocked out, keep it moist in milk. If a filling or crown falls out, you can temporarily cover the exposed tooth with dental cement from a drugstore or sugar-free gum.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you accept walk-in dental emergencies?

We do our best to accommodate same-day emergency patients, but we recommend calling ahead at (714) 998-4151 so we can prepare for your arrival and minimize your wait time. In most cases, we can see you within a few hours of your call.

What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency includes severe tooth pain that does not respond to over-the-counter pain medication, a knocked-out or loose permanent tooth, a broken or cracked tooth, a lost filling or crown exposing the tooth, swelling in the face or gums, uncontrolled bleeding from the mouth, and signs of infection like fever with dental pain.

What should I do if a tooth gets knocked out?

Pick up the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with water but do not scrub it or remove any tissue. Try to place it back in the socket. If you cannot, keep it moist in a cup of milk or saliva. Call us immediately. The best chance of saving the tooth is reimplantation within 30 minutes.

How much does an emergency dental visit cost?

The cost depends on the treatment needed. An emergency exam with X-rays typically costs $75 to $200. Additional treatment like a filling, root canal, or extraction will have separate fees. We accept most insurance plans and offer same-day financing through Cherry, CareCredit, Sunbit, and LendingClub if cost is a concern.

Are you open evenings for emergencies?

Yes. We are open until 7 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and until 5 PM on Tuesday and Friday. If your emergency happens outside business hours, call our office at (714) 998-4151 and follow the prompts for after-hours guidance.

Can you do a root canal the same day as an emergency visit?

In many cases, yes. If Dr. Bhatia determines that a root canal is needed and there is time in the schedule, she can often complete the procedure the same day. This saves you from a second visit and gets you out of pain faster.

What if my child has a dental emergency?

We treat children of all ages for dental emergencies. Call us right away and let us know your child's age and what happened. Common pediatric emergencies include knocked-out baby teeth, chipped teeth from falls, and toothaches. We will guide you on immediate steps and get your child seen as quickly as possible.

Should I go to the ER or an emergency dentist?

For most dental emergencies, an emergency dentist is the better choice because ERs typically cannot perform dental procedures. They can manage pain and prescribe antibiotics, but you will still need to see a dentist for the actual treatment. Go to the ER if you have uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing or swallowing, a broken jaw, or facial swelling that is spreading toward your eye or throat.
