What Is a Dental Implant?
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium. It works like a screw that is surgically placed into your jawbone. Once it fuses with the bone, it holds a connector piece called an abutment, which holds a custom-made crown, the part of the tooth you see.
A dental implant has three parts:
- A screw-like titanium root
- An abutment
- A custom crown that matches your surrounding teeth
An implant replaces both the root and the visible crown, which is why it works almost like the tooth you lost.
Who Is a Good Candidate for a Dental Implant?
Any adult with a fully developed jawbone, enough bone density, and healthy gums can get dental implants. Dr. Bhatia reviews your medical history and takes X-rays to make sure they are safe for you.
Implants are recommended if you have
- Healthy gums with no active gum disease
- Enough jawbone density to hold the implant
- Good health, with no conditions that slow healing, such as high blood sugar or a weak immune system
- Willingness to stop smoking until your gums have healed
Not enough jawbone? Bone grafting may help.
Implants are usually not recommended for
- People who are pregnant
- People undergoing cancer treatment
- People dealing with substance abuse
- People allergic to implant materials, which is very rare
- People who recently had a heart attack or stroke
What Happens If You Don't Replace a Missing Tooth?
The gap may not bother you at first, but if you leave it for long, the jawbone beneath it can shrink and change the shape of your face. The neighboring teeth may start drifting toward the gap. When that happens, your bite becomes uneven and puts extra pressure on your other teeth.
Over time, the bone can become so weak that you need bone grafting and other procedures just to rebuild a healthy base for an implant.

Types of Dental Implants
Whether you get a single implant, an implant bridge, or All-on-4, the implants themselves can be one of three types, depending on what is best for you.
Endosteal Implants
The most common type. Standard-sized implants placed directly into the jawbone for regular cases.
Subperiosteal Implants
Used when bone height is very limited and a post cannot go into the bone. The implant rests on top of the jawbone, beneath the gum.
Mini Implants
Smaller implants used to replace smaller teeth or to stabilize dentures.
The Dental Implant Process
The whole process, including the crown, takes about 3 to 9 months, depending on whether you need an extraction or bone grafting, how quickly you heal, and a few other factors. Here is the process we follow at MySmile Dental Care.
Step 1: Consultation
Dr. Bhatia takes detailed X-rays and 3D imaging in-house to check your jawbone density and overall oral health. She explains the available options and recommends the best one. Feel free to ask questions and talk through any concerns.
Step 2: Implant Site Preparation
Dr. Bhatia removes any decayed or broken tooth that is still present. If you need bone grafting to build a solid base for the implant, she will let you know. Most grafting is done in-house. Severe bone loss that needs extensive grafting, sinus lifts, or jaw reconstruction is referred to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon or periodontist she trusts.
Step 3: Implant Placement
This is a minor surgery. The area is numbed with local anesthesia and the titanium post is placed into your jawbone. It usually takes less than an hour and can often be done the same day as your extraction or consultation.
Step 4: Osseointegration
This is the healing stage, where your jawbone gradually fuses with the implant. It takes about 3 to 6 months depending on your bone density and overall health. We usually see you about two weeks after surgery to make sure you are healing as expected.
Step 5: Crown Placement
Once the implant has fully fused with the bone, Dr. Bhatia attaches a custom-made crown shaped and shaded to match your other teeth.

Watch: How Dental Implants Work
Are Dental Implants Safe?
Yes. Implants are one of the safest procedures in modern dentistry, and titanium dental implants have been used since the 1960s. The U.S. FDA notes they can significantly improve a person's appearance and quality of life.
Like any medical procedure, implants carry some risk of failure, usually from infection or very slow healing. This mostly happens with uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, or gum disease. Dr. Bhatia checks your medical history thoroughly and won't recommend implants if she believes they may not be safe for you.
How Much Do Dental Implants Cost in Anaheim, CA?
A single-tooth dental implant in Anaheim usually costs about $3,000 to $5,500. That includes the procedure, the standard titanium implant, the abutment, and a custom-made crown. Additional treatments like extractions and bone grafting are usually charged separately. See our full dental implant cost breakdown for more detail.

Dental Implants vs Bridges vs Dentures: Which Is Best for You?
Each option has its pros and cons. The right choice depends on your budget, your overall health, and the health of your jawbone.
| Feature | Dental Implants | Dental Bridges | Dentures |
|---|---|---|---|
| What they are | Titanium posts inserted into the jawbone | An artificial tooth held by two crowns that fit over the neighboring natural teeth | Removable artificial teeth |
| Effect on the jawbone | Helps prevent bone loss | Jawbone density decreases over time | Jawbone density decreases over time |
| Effect on neighboring teeth | None | Supporting teeth are filed down to hold the crowns | None, but clasps can irritate the gums over the years |
| Stability | Work like natural teeth | Highly stable | Can shift or slip when eating |
| Cost | Highest upfront cost | Less expensive than implants | Least expensive option |

How much do dental implants cost in Anaheim, CA?
A single-tooth dental implant in Anaheim usually costs about $3,000 to $5,500. That includes the procedure, the standard titanium implant, the abutment, and a custom-made crown. Extractions and bone grafting are usually charged separately. You get a detailed, itemized quote at your free consultation.
How long do dental implants last?
The titanium post usually lasts 20 to 40 years with good oral hygiene and habits. The abutment and crown go through daily wear and tear just like natural teeth and may need to be replaced after 10 to 15 years.
Do dental implants hurt?
Having a post placed in your jawbone sounds painful, but the area is numbed with local anesthesia during surgery. Any swelling or soreness during recovery can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers. Most of our patients report only minor discomfort.
Does dental insurance cover dental implants?
Coverage for dental implants in Anaheim varies by plan. Many standard plans do not cover implants or cover only a small percentage. Others cover up to 50% of the cost, and some cover only the crown. Our team will check your benefits and coordinate with your insurance provider directly.
Can I get a dental implant the same day as a tooth extraction?
Yes, if your gums are healthy and you have enough bone density. Qualifying patients can have the implant placed the same day as the extraction, and sometimes the same day as the consultation.
How long does the whole implant process take?
The full process, including the final crown, usually takes about 3 to 9 months. It depends on whether you need an extraction or bone grafting, how quickly your body heals, and a few other factors. Most of that time is the jawbone fusing with the implant.
Who should not get dental implants?
Implants are usually not recommended for people who are pregnant, undergoing cancer treatment, dealing with substance abuse, allergic to implant materials (very rare), or who recently had a heart attack or stroke. Uncontrolled diabetes, smoking, and active gum disease also raise the risk of failure. Dr. Bhatia reviews your full medical history before recommending implants.
How experienced is Dr. Bhatia with dental implants?
Dr. Bhatia has been placing dental implants for more than 15 years. She is a graduate of New York University College of Dentistry and an active member of the American Dental Association and the Orange County Dental Association.
